Critical WARNING for our industry
Battle for the brand [Verifiable Credentials] by Anil John
This in turn is generating allergic reactions from incumbent players who have often played the gatekeeper role in this domain, who after ignoring and laughing at the work for the longest time, are now becoming concerned about its success, traction and global adoption.
Their reactions are manifesting themselves in some specific ways

DWeb 2022 Talk: Decentralized Identity Open Standards IdentityWoman
In Europe, thanks to EBSI, you might see the advantages of verifiable credentials when moving between borders or notarizing documents. And maybe somewhere else entirely, you will find some self-issued digital identity that misses BitchX and talks complete nonsense, anonymously and securely. All of these are powered by DIDs and VCs.

Hear from Ripple GM, [Monica Long]—in under 60 seconds!—how decentralized identity can give individuals a new power to control their personal, online data in a Web3 future.
In April, we announced a $34M Series A round led by a16z crypto. This funding enables us to lead research efforts in cutting-edge privacy and usability technology for identity, while growing our product teams and executing partnerships across the Web3 ecosystem. You can learn more in our announcement here.

Decentralized Identity as a Meta-platform: How Cooperation Beats Aggregation Michael Shea, Samuel M. Smith Ph.D., Carsten Stöcker Ph.D., w contributions from Juan Caballero Ph.D. and Matt G. Condon
the network scaling law for meta-platforms differs from the network scaling law traditionally seen on closed platforms today, and we will examine how the cooperating members of a decentralized identity meta-platform may out-compete traditional, centralized identity platforms
“What would it take to build a sufficiently robust privacy moat around every digital citizen such that the costs of surveillance capitalism become too onerous for companies to pursue?”
Customers need solutions, not SSI technology. We will struggle in fostering adoption if we try to sell SSI technology to end customers. We should rather focus on selling them solutions to business problems. For example, Slack sells productivity/collaboration tools to enterprises, not Internet technology or communication protocols. The same approach should be taken but us identity folks!

Federal agencies in the United States, namely TSA, have already committed to using ISO/IEC 18013-5, which means that state DMVs will need to build mDLs aligned with the same standard in order for their driver’s licenses to be usable for travel at airports. The ISO working groups, which Spruce is a part of, are still actively discussing methods for how an mDL is issued, presented online (ISO/IEC 18013-7), and refreshed.
IOT - Digital Twin
Capabilities-based access control is a promising paradigm that can handle the particularities of IoT systems.
Nevertheless, existing systems are not interoperable and they have limitations, such as lack of proof of possession, inefficient revocation mechanisms, and reliance on trusted third parties.
In this paper we overcome these limitations by designing and implementing a system that leverages Verifiable Credentials (VCs) to encode the access rights. Our solution specifies protocols for requesting and using VCs that can be mapped to OAuth 2.0, includes an efficient and privacy preserving proof of possession mechanism, and it supports revocation. We implement and evaluate our solution and we show that it can be directly used even by constrained devices.
Products Passports & Trust Registries: Trust Continuum™ Methodology. Continuum Loop [Digital Twin]
Our Trust Continuum™ Methodology helps organizations integrate digital product passports into their supply chain. We help you understand how you can use digital product passports to establish trust and accountability in your supply chain and how they can streamline processes and reduce costs. We help you assess the risks and benefits of integrating digital product passports into your existing systems and help you develop a plan for implementing them.

Beyond the fetish of open OpenFuture, Balázs Bodó
The future of the internet is not what it used to be. Again. With web3, it is now the third time the promise of an exciting, novel, maybe revolutionary social, political, economic, cultural experiment founded upon open, freely accessible, distributed, decentralized techno-social infrastructures degrades into a dystopian nightmare.
[Jevons Paradox] As VCs make it easier to share certified information, more use cases will arise to demand this information. I’m hesitant that this is useful in society though.
