We’re extending an invitation to experiment, and partake in conversations which question and reimagine the assumptions underpinning accounting, money formation, agreements, registries, identity
systems, laws or institutions; to collaborate on propositional and positive visions for the future.
The Great Enabler: Transforming the Future of Britain’s Public Services Through Digital Identity 2023-06-16 Institute Global
Public services in the UK don’t require reform. They need transformation. In a world in which we can set up a bank account in minutes or pay for our shopping with the tap of a phone, the era of slow and cumbersome government services must come to an end. Our current bureaucracy manifests problems further down the line; months-long waits for passports and mounting delays to asylum-claims processing are just two examples of this.
How Indigenous Groups Are Leading the Way on Data Privacy 2023-06-07 Scientific American
Āhau, a free and open-source app developed by and for Māori to record ancestry data, maintain tribal registries and share cultural narratives, takes a similar approach. A tribe can create its own Pātaka (the Māori word for storehouse), or community server, which is simply a computer running a database connected to the Internet. From the Āhau app, tribal members can then connect to this Pātaka via an invite code, or they can set up their database and send invite codes to specific tribal or family members. Once connected, they can share ancestry data and records with one another. All of the data are encrypted and stored directly on the Pātaka.

Finding the Others: The Social Power of Open Recognition Badges 2023-06-13 We Are Open Coop
These days, it’s rare to come across a completely blank face when talking to people about Open Badges. That’s because recently we’ve seen mass adoption, meaning that hundreds of millions of badges are now being earned every year. After 12 years, we’re no longer in the world of ‘potential’ use: badges are now helping people get hired.

The unique nature of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Digital Travel Credential (DTC) presents an exceptional opportunity to build a next-generation system for passport issuance and inspection, setting a new standard for the traveler experience. Entrust fully supports the vision set out by the ICAO for technological advances from the current eMRTD standard for ePassports to a future state that will see only virtual eMRTDs. Fast forward to the early 1980s, several national and international networks have been created, one of the biggest launching in 1986 when the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) funded supercomputers at several universities and connected them to the network, enabling access for research and academic organizations in the United States.
How Verifiable Credentials Can Empower Small Businesses 2023-05-10 Sam Curren, Indicio
Let’s start with a few of the problems that all businesses face: employee and access management, engaging customers, and payroll. While larger organizations can have entire teams dedicated to each of these tasks, leaner businesses — such as a single location — might have a small number of people trying to manage everything; this is where verifiable credentials can make all the difference.

Decentralization isn't enough. It's about people 2023-06-21 Ben Werdmuller
Decentralized protocols are infrastructure in the same way that servers are infrastructure. Nobody cares if a traditional social network is built on AWS or Google Cloud. What they care about is the community: can they follow people they’re interested in, can they engage in great conversations, potentially find an audience for the things they make, and do all of this safely and without abuse.

Decentralisation makes the user experience worse
The people who accept these trade-offs are not normal, and they’re in charge
Mastodon doesn’t scale well, and its user base accepts no funding model other than charity
In no small part, Mastodon’s culture is exclusionary

The difference between digital identity, identification, and ID 2018-12-19 Jonathan Donner, Caribou Digital
For example, the World Bank promotes the term “Identification for Development” (ID4D) and has drawn together a diverse group of institutions to issue the “Principles on Identification.” The ID2020 alliance focuses on many of the same objectives through its “global partnership committed to improving lives through digital identity.” And USAID has recently written in this area under the banner of “Digital ID” (DID for short). The driving force behind many of these initiatives is Sustainable Development Goal 16.9: “By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.”
