Before eIDAS, the EU’s digital landscape was quite fragmented. Each country had its own rules for online identification and digital trust services, making it hard for individuals and businesses to work smoothly across borders. There were no uniform rules for electronic signatures, and people generally didn’t trust digital processes.
The pilots can be broadly divided into three categories: User Authentication, e-Signing, and Website Authentication or Qualified Web Authentication Certificates (QWACs). As the last category is outside European control and looking increasingly unimplementable, I will focus initially on the User Authentication and E-Signing.

Verifiable Credentials (VC) are an open standard for digital credentials. They represent the electronic equivalent of the physical credentials that we all have, such as a driver’s license, ID card, passport, etc. One of the great advantages of these verifiable credentials over physical credentials is that they are much more reliable and secure.

Wallets, data safes and key safes share the same goal: to give the individual user more control over their personal data. However, these solutions provide different implementations of this goal in practice. To better understand whether these solutions compete or complement each other, it is important to understand how they work.
This paper presents a statistical physical generation of random keys for a decentralized identity ecosystem that uses Web 3.0 protocols. Web 3.0 is driven by secure keys, typically represented in hexadecimal, that are pseudo-randomly generated by an initialization vector and complex computational algorithms. We demonstrate that the statistical physical Kirchhoff-law-Johnsonnoise (KLJN) scheme eliminates the additional computational power by naturally generating truly random binary keys to drive the creation of decentralized identifiers (DIDs) that are appended to an Ethereum blockchain.
The centralized nature of education inadvertently places students in underprivileged communities at a disadvantage in comparison to students in economically advantaged communities, thus a decentralized approach to education would eliminate the vast majority of such discrepancies. In the present paper, we integrate Decentralized Identity (DID) with Web 3.0 to upload credentials linked directly to the user. Each credential is appended to an Ethereum blockchain that, by design, cannot be altered once uploaded. We include DID document based access controls to display the candidate’s upload and verification history
With the new eIDAS regulation, elements of SSI, such as the wallet, are being pushed onto the market. However, since the model is relatively new, the security threats are still not fully known. This is shown by a brief security analysis of selected existing SSI wallets. In order to get a picture of the known threats, we systematically analyze and categorize related work in the field of SSI and elements applied by SSI. We then evaluate their application to current SSI systems and identify future work.
