Upcoming events, company news, organizational updates; standards, specifications, and deep thoughts on everything related to decentralized identity and verifiable credentials
The two hackathons, participated by 20+ teams, 40+ organizations, and 200+ attendees, saw a wide variety of use cases from across industries and public agencies that demonstrated the real-world and potential benefits of mDLs. The CA DMV is hosting this briefing to share with the broader mDL ecosystem of stakeholders and the public the outcomes, learnings, and (selected) use cases from the hackathons as well as our plans to support the hackathon teams and beyond to carry on the momentum.
Eugene Kim who played an instrumental role in the early user-centric identity community has a practice called Faster Then 20(how to get stuff done in faster then 20 years). He has a 12 week (program face-to-face kickoff + weekly 90 min zooms) coming up starting in February that I thought some in leadership in this community might find valuable. So I’m sharing it.

While both Digital Credentials API and FedCM can help advance self-sovereign identity, FedCM started with the browsers, and Digital Credentials API deals with digital wallets, and they can have different privacy properties. (slides) (discussion 11:10)
BBS and its extensions are currently undergoing standardization within the Crypto Forum Research Group (CFRG) of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF). (The IRTF is related to the IETF but focuses on longer term research related to the Internet.)
Federation Integrity ensures mutual trust between two entities is established always from a common trust anchor. Any resolved metadata and policies that govern the client application and the OpenID provider in a transaction will then fall under the rules of the same federation and thus will be aligned and consistent with one another.
The Public Dialogue on Trust in Digital Identity Services was commissioned in March 2023 by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) in partnership with UK Research and Innovation’s Sciencewise programme. It was designed and delivered by the deliberative engagement specialists Hopkins Van Mil and independently evaluated by Navigator Consulting with Graphic Science.

On the 22nd of February 2024, the European Commission hosted the conference “Can verifying legal entities be as easy as 1, 2, Web3?” in Brussels, Belgium, to investigate the challenges legal entities face in proving ownership of information.
The development of a robust ecosystem around the upcoming E-ID implementation in Switzerland represents an essential next step in building Trust Infrastructure. For us at DIDAS it has always been vital to emphasize that while the E-ID verifiable credential is very important, it is still just a building block

The two successful community hackathons, co-hosted with the OpenID Foundation, not only empowered government and private sector entities to build, test, and demonstrate impactful digital identity use cases, but also addressed the Cold Start Problem faced by emerging identity ecosystems.
Incorporation of the OpenID for Verifiable Credentials family of specifications into the mDL architecture proved a valuable element for those involved.
The Ethical Web Principles, which build on W3C’s core values and principles in the web and its architecture, are a call to action for the web industry and for W3C itself, aiming to deliver positive social outcomes. As we expand the web platform, we must consider the consequences of our work. As members of the web community, we each play a part in shaping its future.
