The vaguely dystopian technology fueling China’s Olympic Games RestofWorld
Beijing is taking the second mid-pandemic Games to new heights inside a “closed loop,” a sealed and guarded area from airport to arena, and deploying fleets of robots and unprecedented levels of health tracking and surveillance. Nearly 3,000 athletes, plus thousands more participants, including coaches, staff, and media, will be inside the bubble.
Bureaucratic Supremacy MoxyTongue
This "bureaucratic supremacy" has allowed abstraction of words like "people" to render a Government operated by bureaucrats, not under the authority of the people "of, by, for" whom it was originally conceived and instantiated, but instead under methods of processing bureaucratic intent.
A Defacto National ID from ID.me Phil Windley
Last week, I reported ID.me’s claim that they were not doing 1:many facial recognition. Turns out that’s not true… Whether you are a fan of or hate the idea of a national ID, ID.me is on the path to become one. I don’t think having a private third party run the national ID system is a good idea.
The IRS is reportedly looking for ID.me alternatives amid privacy concerns The Verge
users aren’t obligated to file their taxes online and that it’s unlikely for the department to establish in-house software due to a “lack of funding for IRS modernization.”
Dangerous Data: the role of data collection in genocides The Engine Room
the UK Government passed what has been described by Jim Killock, director of the Open Rights Group, as the “most extreme mass surveillance law ever passed in a democracy”. The law, known officially as the Investigatory Powers Act, forces UK internet providers to store browsing histories — including domains visited — for one year, in case of police investigations. Unofficially, and in reference to its invasive powers, it has been nicknamed the Snooper’s Charter.

Use Cases
When it Comes to Decentralized Identity, Sell Solutions Not Rules Indicio
we advocate “machine-readable governance” as an architectural solution.
First, machine-readable governance simplifies how decentralized identity works: The user software handles the rules for information flows and authentication, which are established and published by the entities with authority for governing the use case.
Second, this architecture makes these rules transparent.
Third, and critically, it enables these rules to function offline through caching, which, when you think about it, is an essential feature in any digital identity verification system; trust can’t be dependent on a Wi-Fi signal.

Introducing Peaq ID | Self-Sovereign Identity For Machines Peaq
In case you’re wondering why machines need their own self-sovereign identities, check out our article on Self-Sovereign Identity for Machines, here.
The peaq DID specifications and peaq Pallet DID are now available on the peaq Github.
Self-Sovereign Machine Identities (SSMIs) are the critical first foundation block for a decentralized machine economy, or what we at peaq call the Economy of Things.
Overview
Overview of SSI Wallets by Gimly ← oldy but goodie
SSI Wallets are one of the essential components that make self sovereign identity possible. An increasing number of SSI Wallet apps are being released, each with slightly differing feature sets. This post is intended as an evergreen overview and comparison of SSI Wallet apps. If we discover a new one, we'll add it here. If you've developed an SSI Wallet app, feel free to make a pull request to this repository to get added to this list.
MSFT Explains: Decentralized identity: The Direct Presentation model
When we use identity-related credentials in the real world, they often have different properties than digital credentials. There are two separate ceremonies in most cases: issuance and presentation. If you have spent any time at a department of motor vehicles or a passport office, you’ve seen what an issuance ceremony can be – it is usually an intensive process, but the tradeoff is that once you have a credential like a driver’s license or passport, you can use that credential for multiple purposes, at multiple places, over a long period of time.

EU digital sovereignty project Gaia-X hands out ID tech contracts The Register
Interestingly, Vereign's and DAASI's statements on the matter fail to mention a third player in the Gaia-X SSI project: Pune-based AyanWorks. While dependency on US tech giants might be frowned upon, at least from a cloud perspective, it seems there is no problem with going elsewhere for one's sovereign identity technology needs.
AyanWorks:
@ayanworkstech is excited to announce that we, along with our partners Vereign and @DAASI_Int, have won 3 tenders from @gaiax_aisbl to build SSI solutions
The open source companies Vereign and DAASI International will lay the cornerstone for the Gaia-X sub-project GXFS Daasi
A decentralised identity is supposed to allow users more self-determination in regards to identity data by putting the user in charge of the storage and transfer of their data. The data is only stored in a so-called wallet which belongs to the user. The wallet also contains digital keys for the authentication with services – making individual profiles for each service obsolete. State-of-the-art Blockchain technology ensures the reliability of the used data.

Implementing Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) for a digital staff passport at UK NHS Mary Lacity Walton, Erran Carmel
Business practitioners want to know what is unique about SSI. Is there anything idiosyncratic about managing an SSI project compared to other digital projects? How can we apply SSI to deliver business value? We help to answer those questions by explaining SSI through a case study at UK National Health Service (NHS). NHS developed a digital staff passport to verify health professionals’ qualifications and credentials so that healthcare staff could be moved around quickly during COVID-19

WEB3
Web3, entangled: Holochain: a marlinspike to undo the knots Holochain
As long as a ‘base protocol’ is versatile enough to let people create and express things in an unlimited range of fit-for-purpose application protocols, it can be as stale and boring as it likes. And it’s precisely the decentralisation, versatility, and stability of these base protocols — HTTP, email, and yes, Bitcoin and Ethereum — that allow platforms to innovate so quickly on top of them.
The Third Web Tante
A good explanation and critique of Web3
Web3 is still a very loosely defined set of ideas, so it is hard to precisely say what it is and what it isn’t, but we’ll try to approximate it as good as possible. But in order to do this, we’ll have to understand the technologies used first.
The Best of Both Worlds: Solving Doctorow’s Oracle Problem Vinay Gupta
So while the blockchain space is in some abstract sense perfectly private and perfectly reliable, things are weakest at the joints. The on-ramps and off-ramps are parts of the real world, they’re tied to physical reality and KYC/AML/CTF regulations.
Any system connected to the real world is going to have some of the problems of the real world connected to it too. That’s just life.
