Good Welfare, Bad Platforms?: The Risks of Centralized Digital Identity Systems OpenID
As S. Shakthi and I noted in a recent research paper, digital identity systems are widely seen as datafiers by virtue of their core property of reducing the person to machine-readable data. A datafier is a system that performs the crucial operation of converting the physical into digital. A different, contrasting view is also emerging in research: digital identity systems are increasingly seen as platforms, i.e. “technological building blocks” on which different types of complements can be constructed.

Web3: Self-Sovereign Authority and Self-Certifying Protocols Phil Windley
In this figure, a "host" is some server, somewhere. In Web 1.0, it was just the machine under my desk with no notion of users other than me. Web 2.0 separated the need to host the content from the desire to generate it.
User-centric data on Web3 Ceramic
What if there was a way to give users full sovereign control over their data while getting access to not just the data from your application but many other compatible ones? What if you could promise users that their information would live in a decentralized network where no individual application developer or company could choose to take it down or tamper with, that they own their data in the truest sense?
The metaverse is coming for your biometric and health data Disruptive Asia
A couple of years ago, we were concerned about our social media data sharing our political views, location, and personal details. It may sound now entirely innocent compared to today, when technology companies now want to collect your biometric and health data and begin to build virtual realities and digital copies of you based on that data.
What is Web3? Here Are Some Ways To Explain It To A Friend Consensys
Web3 is the new trendy name for the decentralized web.
Web1 is read-only, Web2 is read-write, Web3 is read-write-own.
Web3 is a money layer for the internet.
Web3 is an identity layer for the internet.
Value Chain of the Open Metaverse Notboring
Despite the large sums of money made by the people who own Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other altcoins, I’ve always viewed the Web3 movement as anti-capitalist. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The movement is really about doing one of the most capitalist things there is: cutting out the middleman. It means that instead of value accruing to the Aggregators, there can be a more direct connection between suppliers and consumers.
